Abstract
Addresses the double bind confronting Latinos: Whereas conservatives think they pose a threat to Anglo culture, some liberals disdain them for consuming resources, such as sympathy, that by rights ought to go to deeply disadvantaged groups, such as blacks or Native Americans. Probes and analyzes the latter (neoliberal) position. Surveys a history of anti-Latino nativism and advises on the desirability of Latino assimilation with the white majority.
