Abstract

This paper examines the role of the different disciplines involved in philological study of language in the Spanish context, more specifically in English studies, disciplines such as grammar, historical linguistics, literature and literary theory, pragmatics, interpretation, stylistics, discourse analysis, or text linguistics. It is argued that the most fruitful approaches occur at the interface of these disciplines, and that there is no clear-cut division of the field into mutually exclusive "linguistic" and "literary" sub-areas.
