Abstract

Bankers acceptances typically arise to finance foreign trade transactions of the United States and other countries. The Fed influenced the market initially through its purchases of acceptances and later through regulation. Certain developments in the last decade have diminished the instrument's appeal to banks and borrowers, thus reducing its importance.
