Abstract

This book chapter, part of a collection on Election Law and Politics, edited by Matthew Streb and to be published by Routledge, provides an introduction to vote-counting disputes in the United States. In addition to a general overview to the history of these disputes, as well as a discussion of the dynamics of how these disputes arise in the context of contemporary law and politics, the chapter focuses on America's two major disputed presidential elections: 1876 and 2000.

Keywords: recount, contest, Bush, Gore, Hayes, Tilden, canvass
