Abstract

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO BANGLADESH AFTER THIRTY YEARS ?

If, for one reason or the other, it becomes possible for me to write again exactly from the present spot (Khulna, Bangladesh) after thirty years, then, believe it or not, I would have to write “Gentlemen, I am writing this letter from three feet below the sea water”.

It may be quite interesting to know, how a person with death sentence passes his days in the prison cell. Those who do not know it may have different notions about this 'how'. Also many such persons do not get the scope to express their "feelings". However, I had the rare opportunity to meet such a person, which enabled me to know how they really pass days.

In July 1970, one renowned Hindu gentleman of our locality (Daulat Khan Bazar, Bhola district) was arrested by the Pakistani army. All who were arrested earlier in similar ways had to face death. So, this gentleman also thought of similar fate. At this stage there happened some changes in the stuffing pattern of the army and the gentlemen returned alive after one month. Instantly he became famous as ‘the man who came out alive from the gallows’. We asked about his experience and he narrated. The same, however, did not match with our expectations. He said that the thought of ‘death’ was extremely painful for the first day when he could not be sure whether he would die or not. Then, from the attitudes and discussions of his captors he became sure about his death. And since that moment, he told, he did in fact feel any stress. He remembered, the moment he wanted to think of his death his brain turned blunt and diverted that thought. Later I discussed this phenomenon with a physician. He told me that it was a natural phenomenon through which human brain creates automatic relief for itself. He also compared it with the so called “hang”-ing of the computer.
