The Appointment of General Yaron: Continuing Impunity for the Sabra and Shatilla Massacres

Abstract

General Amos Yaron was appointed, in 1999, to serve as the head of Israel's Defense Ministry. Prior to his appointment, the United States name him military attaché in 1986, which caused survivors of 1986 massacre of Palestinians to file a complaint, in the District of Columbia District Court, that alleged Yaron violated customary international law, U.S. treaties, and statutes incorporating international customary international law into U.S. law. Yaron’s rise through Israel's Defense Ministry allowed him to evade responsibility, which violated international law. This article, by Linda Malone, explores prohibition of such immunity under international law.
