Abstract
Professor Linda Malone reflects on the emergence of an agricultural/environmental ethic in the Farm Bill of 1990 and the Jeffersonian ideal of an agrarian democracy. The Jeffersonian ideal represented a land where the US was a nation of farm owners, but, currently, farms often must be subsided by the US government. As agriculture grows distant from the land, merging into farm management programs, the Jefferson Ideal for agriculture diminishes.
