Abstract

This study examines the human resource management and performance optimization in Nigerian universities. The poor performance of the universities in Nigeria and the high rate of mortality experienced in that sub-sector are due to the poor performance optimization of the human resources. The study generated data from 100 respondents in two Nigerian universities. The data were equally analyzed statistically with regression and correlation tools aided by SPSS computer programme. The results of the study indicate a strong positive relationship between compensation, promotion, performance evaluation and training / development practices and performance optimization in the university environment. It is equally revealed from the study that the continuous reliance of the Nigerian Universities on the government as the sole financier possesses a serious problem / set back to human resource development and performance optimization in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that human resource management orientation level at the tertiary institutions should serve as credible media to inculcate / imbibe the private sector model of efficiency and effectiveness in order to achieve optimum human resource management and performance optimization in the academic environment.
