Abstract

This collaborative chapter reflects five contributors’ respective cultural backgrounds and how each uses his or her own cultural yardstick to define “the other” – in a common setting, a Chinese market in Beijing. As culture operates in the unconscious (Hall 1959), it is quite natural that one’s expectations and assumptions are derived from what one is familiar with. This chapter examines how one tests such expectations and assumptions when transposed to the cultural setting of the other.
