Abstract
Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) are among the major players in India’s financial and economic system: Rs.100 thousand crores of deposits, Rs.67 thousand crores of credit, 1714 banks and a 10% share of the deposits market in India as on 31st March 2004. UCBs have the advantage that they are self-reliant institution stand on its own legs without support from the state and central Government. The urban cooperative sector has to face the challenges of meeting the competition at the domestic and international level due to the reform process resulting in increased privatization of the economy and also increased market access to the domestic market at the global level. But UCBs have more than demonstrated their ability to actively contribute to recent changes in the sector and new competitive pressures pose serious challenges. Since the operational efficiency of the UCBs is crucial in ensuring adequate and timely flow of credit to urban and semi-urban people for diverse purposes, SWOT analysis deserves serious consideration.
