Abstract

Dental fear refers to the fear of dentistry and of receiving dental care. Anxiety levels among patients with dental problems were related to the patients' perceptions of the likelihood of negative events, and highly anxious patients saw positive events as being less likely than did patients with low anxiety. Studies have registered the existence of anxiety as a consequence of pain mainly particularized in relation to dental problems. Generally, most of the medical domains and non-less the dental one describe the patients who experience acute or chronic suffering as possible candidates to pervasive anxiety and depression.

The main objective of hypnosis in dentistry is to diminish the fear that many people experience when facing the dentist. Also, hypnosis addresses to anxiety and pain felt by the patients with dental problems. From a psychologist’s perspective, techniques such as gradual exposure, relaxation techniques or challenging catastrophic thinking are important.

The present study proposes to analyze and identify the differences between the patients with dental problems who benefited from a hypnotherapeutic intervention and those who did not receive such treatment.
