Abstract

The paper outlines the basic reasons behind extreme poverty in Africa. Migration would form part of the reasons the people on the continent still lives in an abject poverty. Globalization and international migration have contributed immensely to the development of most advanced countries. The evidence used in this paper is based on historical and current research on migration trends, and attitudes and mentality of most Africans. The paper further examines why these attitudes and mentality of most Africans have significantly contributed to Africa’s economic, culture and social failure. It entirely dismisses the idea of colonization as the major cause of most African nations’ failure to achieve a considerable level of economic and social development. Change of mentality and attitude, and reconstruction can undeniably induce economic and social growth; make the African continent attractive to skilled migrants and purge contempt of many Africans. This will go a long way to change the pace of development of most African States and assuage many advanced countries of financial, economic and social burdens.

Keywords: Poverty, African, economic and social development, globalization and international migration, colonization, mentality and attitude
