Meet Scribes - A Society That Promotes Legal-Writing Excellence
Date Written: 2011
Abstract
Since its inception more than 50 years ago, Scribes - The American Scoiety of Legal Writers has advanced the twin goals of encouraging legal authors and improving legal writing. Bar journals and legal newsletters are continually in need of timely and informative articles. And the need for clear and compelling legal writing of all kinds - including articles and books, court briefs, and legal documents - is widely recognized.
The article describes how Scribes works to advance its goals by sponsoring awards that recognize legal writing excellence, conducting programs for legal writers, and sponsoring publications. Among its publications are the book Classic Essays on Legal Advocacy (Lawbook Exchange, 2010) and the highly regarded Scribes Journal of Legal Writing. Despite these efforts, the need remains for more legal authors and better legal writing.
