Abstract
Firstly, this article lays out the general principles of law relating to acquisition and sovereignty. It then discusses whether the climatic and geographical features of the Polar Regions should be taken into account when applying these principles in these areas. Focusing on New Zealand's claim to the Ross Dependency, the article then explores to what extent occupation, possession and control must be present for such a claim to sovereignty over an area of Antarctica to be valid.
