Abstract

This paper examines the current education inequalities in South Africa. Even though the South African government has highlighted the importance of education, there continue to be significant disparities in the quality of education that South Africans receive. After briefly describing these disparities, the paper examines the way in which civil society organizations have interacted with the state to address education inequalities. An analysis of these strategies reveals that civil society organizations have adopted a multi-dimensional approach where they are active at both the local and national levels. The paper concludes with providing an assessment of these efforts and how this issue relates to the political legitimacy of South Africa's democracy.
