Abstract

This paper is a commentary on the recent amnesty initiative by the Nigerian government to the armed extremist Northern Nigeria rebel group, the People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad (Hausa: Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad) widely known in Hausa as Boko Haram. The paper also examines the Northern Ireland peace process as a model for conflict resolution. Furthermore the paper discusses the importance of the rule of law, applicability of international law and the rights of victims as integral to the success of the peace initiatives and conflict resolution in Northern Nigeria.
