Abstract

The article discusses the ritual slaughter in European countries. Ritual slaughtering (that is slaughtering without stunning) is carried out according to rules originating from ancient Jewish and Muslim religious laws. While some European countries enable religious communities, i.e., Jews and Muslims, to slaughter according to their religious specifications, there are also countries that prohibit ritual slaughter.

The article deals with tension between avoiding unnecessary suffering of animals and protecting the right to freedom of religion or belief of minorities. The article considers also whether the alternative of importing kosher or halal meat in place of ritual slaughtering, is an effective and fair alternative.
