Abstract

Inspiration for the future direction of the European Union should come from as close to the European citizens as possible. It must be acknowledged that while peoples’ loyalty will remain with national states; it will first of all be with each person’s own family, friends, locality, region, and culture. Wisely protecting the “fundamental European values” would help us to live up to moral and historic responsibilities towards ancestors and successors, as well as to democratic and humanitarian responsibilities towards those in need in the World; and the EU is able to help.

Keywords: European values, protecting European values, double-edged migration
