Abstract
In this presentation, the author covers the rationale of the concept Universal Service (US) and traces its evolution, before exploring how it is being put in practice internationally. The focus thereafter shifts to the institutional set up and implementation experience of the Indian US Fund. Lessons are drawn and a way forward is suggested keeping in view the current emphasis on deployment of ubiquitous, high speed broadband facilities.
