Abstract

UCBs are required to lend 60 per cent of their total loans and advances to the priority sector and 25 per cent of priority sector lending should go towards weaker sections. Since the operational efficiency of the UCBs is crucial in ensuring adequate and timely flow of credit to urban and semi-urban people for diverse purposes, this study deserves serious consideration. The rest of the paper is structured as follows. The next section provides an understanding the concept of Non-Performing assets (NPAs). Section III gives a brief description of recent prudential norms for UCBs with special reference to NPAs. In section IV, the NPAs of UCBs in India are analyzed over a period of 8 years i.e. from 1999 to 2006. Section V develops the strategies to minimize NPAs of UCBs.
