Abstract

In a democratic set up the society conducts itself according to the rule of law and observes due process of law. Thus awareness of law for every citizen is must. Ignorance of fact may be an excuse but ignorance of law is no excuse. It is difficult for every person to be expert of law hence the institution of Legal Adviser-ship has developed by the lapse of time and keeping in view the needs of the society. Law is a huge subject and occupies important and significant place in the society. Observance of law brings peace and order on political plane and paves the way for economic development and social advancement. A society which shows itself law abiding attract foreign investment and its trade, commerce and industry flourish speedily and smoothly. The reason is that rights appear in such a society safe and protected and people feel themselves comfortable and satisfied.

A legal adviser is a person who is qualified and competent to tender advice in accordance with law. He or she may be an individual or a group or associates of individuals who are learned and well versed in law and in solving legal problems. Their services may be hired on contractual basis temporarily or permanently. There may be law firms or law companies on small or big scale which may even allow internship to those who offer themselves to be so groomed and trained to get skilled in the job. Advocates and Counsel act, plead and represent their clients in court of law. There legal practice is regulated by the Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Act, 1973 and they get a license from the respective Bar councils and also enrol themselves with the District, High Court and Supreme Court Bar Associations. Legal advisers are advocates as well as retired judges and technocrats and experts in their respective fields. They generally have chamber practice.
