Abstract

In developing countries across the globe, lots of wastes are observed on daily basis and yet the economies of these countries continue to dwindle unabated. These wastes could be recycled into more useful products that could benefit their societies as well as boost their economies by adopting green technology with appropriate conversion facilities. Nigeria is one country that has witnessed monumental wastes in recent times. Hence steps are urgently required in this direction to convert these wastes to wealth through recycling process that pave way for adequate utilization for more efficient and buoyant economic growth. On this premise therefore the paper examines the concepts of green economy (as distinct from green economics), its rationale and benefits/contributions towards possible buoyant economic growth in 21st century Nigeria. Green economy is therefore seen as global aggregate of individual communities meeting the needs of its citizens through responsible, local production and exchange of goods and services. It is recommended among others that awareness of how efficient and cost-effective eco living is, should be made the first step in the transformation to a greener society in Nigeria and this could be attained through aggressive sensitization and orientation programmes to highlight the benefits of going green.
