Abstract

In this article, Sir Robin gives his impressions of the Seventh International Appellate Judges’ Conference, held in Ottawa, Canada, on 25-29 September 1995. Sir Robin first describes the structure of the conference. These include New Zealand’s progress on advancing the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as the application of jurisprudence under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to the development and interpretation of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990. Sir Robin also refers to the resolution of the Conference establishing a steering committee to seek financial assistance and technical help. He concludes by recalling the legal connotations of his train journey from Ottawa to Vancouver, which reminded him of both City of Kamloops v. Nielsen (1984) 10 DLR (4th) 641 and the fusion of law and equity. — Abstract by Tim Cochrane.
