Abstract

English Abstract: Should a patient advocacy group blog about topics that are of interested to its target audience? Experts do not necessarily agree when answering this question. This study investigates this issue further with the help of quantitative data. The aim of the study was to investigate if successful blogs of patient advocacy groups differ from others based on quantitative data. For this purpose factors such as heading, semantics, reader comments and social sharing data were used to gain insights.

The analysis of quantitative data shows significant differences when looking at the 25 best patient advocacy blogs and comparing these to less successful ones from countries such as Austria, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Canada and Australia. US blogs from patient advocacy groups were ranked 1, 3, 4 and 5. Position 2 was taken by a Swiss blog. Swiss blogs have gained several top positions in the last six months. Some of them are especially successful in getting reader comments.

Implications of the findings for advocacy groups as well as researchers are outlined.
