Abstract

This presentation reviews the history of our leadership course created at the Simon School of Business in the years 2004-2008. The course is co-authored by Werner Erhard, Michael Jensen, Steve Zaffron and Kari Granger. The intellectual and pedagogical development of the course continues to the present time.

Dean Mark Zupan, who created the opportunity for us to develop this course at the Simon School of Business, invited us to review the history and the present state of this revolutionary course whose promise to participants is the following: “If you do what we ask of you, you will leave this course being a leader and exercising leadership effectively as your natural self-expression.”

We review the theory and structure of the course titled: “Being A Leader and the Effective Exercise of Leadership: An Ontological and Phenomenological Model”. The course is based on an ontological model of leader and leadership that provides direct access to the actual nature of being when one is ‘on the court’, real-time, being a leader, and opens up and reveals the source of one’s actions when one is ‘on the court’, real-time, exercising leadership.

The phenomenological methodology of the course provides direct access to the actual as-lived in the moment, on-the-court experience of being a leader and exercising leadership effectively.

We gave the first presentation of this material at the Simon School of Business “Sands Lecture” on February 5, 2014 and later to the Simon School NYC Conference – “The Global Marketplace: Rising To the Challenges of Regulation, Disruption and International Competition”, May 8, 2014, Grand Hyatt Hotel, New York City.
