Abstract

Australian and Canadian pension funds have been pioneers in infrastructure investing since the early 1990s. They also currently have the world’s highest asset allocation to infrastructure. The article compares and contrasts the experience of institutional investors in the two countries, looking at factors such as infrastructure policies, the pension system, investment strategies, and the governance of pension funds. The respective organizational models of infrastructure investing in the two countries pose a challenge to the traditional “private equity model” that still dominates in Europe and the United States. The Australian and Canadian experiences offer important lessons for both policy makers and investors.
