Abstract
This study will examine the impact of the work of conservative interest groups, policy planning institutes, and think-tanks like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) on recent public higher education pronouncements and policy enactments at both the national and state levels. It will look at the substance of this conservative agenda, their supporting issue frames, and specific policy proposals as well as the success of the resulting laws, educational programs and administrative regulations, particularly in those states where Republicans have gained control over state governorships and legislatures. Special attention will be given to the likely impact of this recent legislative activity and supporting government administrative appointments on the humanities and the social sciences at the nation’s public universities. Finally, the paper will discuss and attempt to project the general implications for the American political system that may be likely to evolve out of the relative success of this right-wing education policy agenda and its programmatic implementation at the major institutions of U.S. higher education.
