Abstract
This paper explores the application of regime politics approaches to state constitutional politics. I examine two case studies of assaults on state judicial power: the 1935 judicial purge in Rhode Island and Chris Christie’s court packing in New Jersey today. Attention is focused on the context, successes, and difficulties both assaults faced. I offer some preliminary observations of the value of comparative state studies with particular attention on the consideration of relative institutional legitimacy in explaining the successes of assaults on judicial power.
