Abstract

Following Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) is currently an emerging Business Process Management (BPM) area. Believed to have its origins in India, this emerging industry trend is now on the rise in other markets like Eastern Europe and is expected to grow at CAGR of 23.12 percent over the period 2013-2018. We conduct an exploratory literature review to find out the current state of academic research in this topic, which perspective or industry scholars have examined and if there is any gap or potential avenues that may be explored for future academic research. We followed a two-stage method to find relevant articles regarding KPO research. First, we queried the keywords “KPO,” “Knowledge Process Outsourcing,” “Knowledge Outsourcing” and “Outsourcing” in Google Scholar and Stevens Institute of Technology Library to find the first batch of relevant articles. Second, we looked for additional articles using the references of the articles found in the first step. The final results were 26 articles on KPO research, ranging from 2004 to 2013. In addition, to add context to our exercise we review relevant findings on outsourcing literature dating back to 1992, as suspected we find little to none research reviewed in KPO.

Keywords: KPO, ITO, BPM, BPO, Information Technology Outsourcing, Business Process Outsourcing, Knowledge Process Outsourcing, Business Process Management
