Abstract

English Abstract: Open pit mining or megamining has involved the rearrangement of the territory corresponding to the area of ‘Cerrejón’ coal field in the northern Colombian department of La Guajira. Moreover, it had been facilitated by the ‘governance of cultural diversity’, which assigns political, economic and cultural roles and rights to black people or ‘afroguajiro’ inhabitants of the region, represented as ‘others’ of the national state. This article presents the historical, sociological and political process by which one of these communities, transit from being passive subjects of the Company (Carbones del Cerrejón Limited) and the State, to demand their recognition as collective subjects and ethnic groups. Roche’s inhabitants have engaged the reinvention as community from their experience of History-diaspora. They have further appropriated their ‘tough barbarians’ representation, simultaneously uprooted and resistant. From the recognition of the breaks and continuities of their cultural tradition they claim today for ethnic autonomy.
