Abstract

The beginning of legal principle of religious freedom parallels with the emergence of international law. The historical development of the right to 'freedom of religion' and its incorporation in international legal documents reflect a move from 'protection of groups' to 'recognition of the rights of the individual'. In South Asia, religion is considered as stark stepping stone of identity and also as 'effective tool' of political mobilization. Either explicitly or implicitly, the concept 'freedom of religion' is recognized in the text of the Constitution of the countries of South Asia. However, this indefeasible freedom is always under the thicket of appalling violence in every corner of South Asia region.
