Abstract
As reported by Reuters, a Brazilian court recently responded favorably to a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of "Sandra, a 29-year-old Sumatran orangutan [held] at the Buenos Aires zoo." "Court Rules Orangutan Held In Argentina Zoo Is 'Non-Human Person' And Can Be Freed," Dec. 21, 2014.
That account recalled my 1968 brief addressing a hypothetical dispute between Japan and the U.S.A. over the status of macaques held in the San Diego Zoo. Because it may be of interest and was previously published only in a periodical of limited distribution, an abbreviated version is offered here.
