French Abstract: Comment imaginer, en 1900, que le XXe siècle allait une expansion démogra-phique conduisant à un quadruplement de la population dans le monde ? Les caractéris-tiques de ce phénomène doivent être étudié en détail afin d’éclairer ses raisons. Il con-vient aussi de mettre en évidence les grands contrastes régionaux, puis de réfléchir à l’avenir.

English Abstract: How to imagine in 1900 that the twentieth century was a demographic expansion leading to a quadrupling of the population in the world? The learn the characteristics of this phenomenon must be studied in detail to inform its reasons. It is also necessary to highlight the major regional contrasts, then think about the future.
