Abstract
The paper reviews the current state of employee ownership in Britain. It discusses the various forms of employee ownership, highlighting trust-owned, directly-owned, and hybrid forms. It then considers the influences on the development of employee ownership, finding that political support is the strongest but not the only influence in employee ownership activity. The paper highlights variations in the ownership and governance characteristics of employee-owned firms, and links these to the circumstances of ownership conversion. Four main groups of employee-owned firms are identified: conversions arising from privatisation, business succession, owners concerns to share ownership, and business start-ups.
