Abstract

In Applying Value-Added Methods to Teachers in Untested Grades and Subjects, Michelle Croft and Richard Buddin purported to “review[] value-added methods with particular focus on alternative approaches to improve teacher evaluation in untested subjects.” This review is flawed in two significant aspects that this Counterpoint addresses. First, the authors mischaracterized the debate about VAM as an all-or-nothing proposition. Second, Croft and Buddin provided an incomplete overview of the legal dimension of the use of VAM for teachers in untested grades or subjects.
