Abstract

One of the most important long-term trends in global higher education is the trend toward the creation of small, decentralized, faculty-led residential colleges within larger institutions. Small collegiate societies of this kind — called “houses” on some campuses and modeled ultimately on the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge — are being established in universities public and private, large and small, wealthy and less wealthy, in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, China, and elsewhere around the world. This residential college movement seeks to repair the damage that was wrought by the post-WWII bureaucratic industrialization of higher education, and to provide students and faculty alike with a more “collegiate way of living” — a comprehensive and academically rich educational environment that encourages the full development of intellect and character.
