Abstract

On August 2, 1990, Iraq alarmed the world by invading Kuwait. The United States quickly seized the opportunity to empower the United Nations and establish itself as a legitimate player in the Middle East both diplomatically and militarily in the process of ejecting Iraqi forces from Kuwait and weakening Saddam’s war machine. This paper provides an analysis and assessment of whether the coalition’s ground offensive was effective in achieving those desired strategic effects.
