Abstract
The formation of World Trade Organization is an important milestone in the history of international trade. It registered its existences in Jan. 1995. GATT in its initial stage covered only goods. Later, it included agriculture and textile in the fold of multilateral trade negotiations while WTO dealt with the different aspects such as investments, services, and intellectual property rights in particular. The main objective of WTO is the liberalization of world trade. Member countries are required to apply fair trade rules covering commodities, services and intellectual property. WTO also encourages development and economic reforms among the increasing number of developing countries.
India is a signatory to the WTO agreement executed at Marrakech in 1994 and has made national commitment in respect of market access for all goods. The present study is an effort to highlight India’s those commitments under the major headings like, Bindings, Quantitative restrictions, Anti dumping & safeguards, Technical barriers to trade and sanitary and phyto-sanitary measures, Intellectual property, The general agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), Trade related investment measures (TRIMS), Environment, Information technology agreement (ITA), Global electronic commerce and Agreement on agriculture.
The study is ended with comments regarding India’s commitment on WTO.
