Abstract
This paper features five draft entries prepared for "The Max Planck Encyclopedia of European Private Law." Two entries outline the foundations of German commercial law, i.e., the provisions in the first commercial code ("ADHGB") and the decisions by the first supreme court ("ROHG"). The other three entries explore the current state of corporate and securities law, from both a historical and a comparative perspective. The focus is on "Company Law," on "Exchanges," and on the "Stock Corporation." A recurring theme running through these three entries is the paramount importance of regulations and directives passed by the European Union.
