Abstract
Empirical legal research is gaining ground in Europe. This ELS trend is also visible in private international law research. The rise of empirical legal research is to be welcomed, since it more systematically reveals the actual use of private international law tools and the needs of the users, and can contribute to better policy and law-making. However, consideration is to be given to the appropriate use of empirical methods, the required training in this regard, and the limitations of time and availability of data.
