Abstract

Over dependence on oil driven economy casts fear on many Nigerians with regards to what is likely to happen when the oil wells dry up eventually. As an alternative to oil driven economy, this paper considers a shift from the boom-and-burst mode of economic management to the integration of indigenous technology in Nigeria. While the paper agrees with previous studies that the bane to progress in indigenous technology in Nigeria is hinged on their crude nature, low economic and demand values, the inefficiency of the machines and the high human labour, it posits that there are many other outlets to facilitate this shift. To this end, a number of strategies are suggested for effective integration of indigenous technology which includes seeking for appropriate technology, introducing indigenous technology trade fair, increasing the tariff on imported similar products by over 500% and commencement of exportation of existing popular and refined products as trial products, among others.
