Abstract

In 2003, we set out on a project to think about a canon of negotiation, the ideas and subjects that should be considered for inclusion in negotiation training across disciplines and types of education. This article describes the context and foundations of the early phases of this project, including a November 2003 symposium held at the Marquette University Law School. Collectively, we identified the subjects that are already part of the interdisciplinary negotiation canon, eliminated items taught in only one discipline and then sought to determine those that should be included as part of the interdisciplinary negotiation canon and were not yet recognized as such. The article introduces twenty-five initial essays in the canon, drawing from fields that include law, psychology, behavioral economics, cultural studies, urban planning, and philosophy.
