Abstract
We set out to create the Electronic World Treaty Index (eWTI), a comprehensive list of both bilateral and multilateral treaties formed during the 20th century. This project augments Rohn's World Treaty Index by integrating several other depositories of treaties, such as the League of Nations Treaty Series and the United Nations Treaty Series. Once complete, this digital dataset will allow scholars to quickly and easily consider the universe of treaty-making over the course of the 20th century. Though other scholars have collected and coded various treaty data, prior projects have focused on a specific treaty topic (alliances for Leeds et al., 2003), a random sub-sample of specific treaty categories (Koremenos, Lipson and Snidal, 2001) or limit their search to multilateral agreements (Hoffman and Denemark, 2008). Our Electronic World Treaty dataset, on the other hand, will contain the state of world and regional relations across all cross-sections of agreements in the 20th century.
