Abstract

This paper attempts to link the formation of the Moro identity with the emergence of two separatist movements in Mindanao. Important events in the late 1960s and early 1970s are examined to explain the factors that have raised the consciousness of the Muslims to identify themselves as Moro and to begin their struggle for an independent state in Mindanao.

Keywords: Muslims in the Philippines, separatist movements
