Abstract

This study examines the relationship between students’ perception of pre-lecture videos and learning outcomes and assessment of teaching effectiveness for a full-time master of business administration (MBA) corporate finance core class. I compare students’ perceptions on pre-lecture videos (Youtube and screencast) with their perceptions on four learning methods: face-to-face lecture on whiteboards, face-to-face PowerPoint lecture, reading the textbook, and other learning methods (i.e. study group, class discussions, tutoring, etc.). I find that students’ perceptions of face-to-face lecture on whiteboards and Youtube videos which show their instructor explaining the concepts on whiteboards are higher than the rest of four methods. Students perceive that pre-lecture videos enhance their learning and help them earn a better grade. I also find that the pre-lecture videos are positively associated with higher students rating on instructor’s teaching effectiveness.
