Abstract

Disputes Tribunals increase access to justice for small civil claims. The Disputes Tribunals Amendment Act 1998 more than doubles the monetary limits for claims able to be heard in the Tribunals. In this paper, Kate Tokeley argues that this significant increase has a number of negative consequences. She questions the wisdom of such an increase and concludes that alternative options for increasing access to justice should be considered.
