Abstract

English Abstract: This is an initial survey of Professor Shamma Friedman’s recent Studies in the Language and Terminology of Talmudic Literature. This rich, multilayered book is composed of four chapters, each dedicated to a different term found in talmudic literature: olam, toref, berabi/beribbi, setimta’ah. The book’s wide scope and thorough, punctilious research, alongside the author’s sharp legal analysis, not only make it informative, but also provide new insights regarding talmudic literature and its traditions, its language and philosophy, and legal documents.

Although the reviewer is in agreement with the linguistic analysis offered in the book, the survey suggests alternative readings and conclusions that can be drawn from the texts presented by the author. Thus, the reviewer proposes that olam does not mean eternity or forever, but rather just time, sometimes definite and sometimes indefinite. Toref is not the clause which repeats what was already declared in the document, but is rather its main and first clause. As to beribbi: although it indeed means “the son of a rabbi”, it had also a formal meaning. It designated the children of the rabbis [beneihem shel ḥakhamim] who were studying at the yeshivah and its use was restricted to the period before they achieved full rabbinic status. Part of the review of this chapter is devoted to the law of false witnesses. Finally, the review of the chapter on setimta’ah raises doubts regarding the possibility that this term has two interpretations.
