Abstract

Available evidence suggests that the market for commercial mediators is much like the market for entertainers or professional athletes — a winner-take-all market — and unlike the professional job markets from where many mediators are drawn. The reasons are many, from barriers to entry, to the lack of objective measures of quality and limited scalability. The article concludes by offering advice to novice mediators.

Keywords: mediation, dispute resolution, labor market
