Abstract
This essay provides an overview of the intellectual career and contributions of F. A. Hayek to economics, political and legal philosophy and the history of ideas. Although Hayek's contributions were astonishingly wide-ranging they can be viewed as variations on a single paradoxical theme: that for human reason to contribute most to human progress, it has to recognize limits on its capacity to impose rational control.
