Abstract
Many of the modern towns that had their origin from a Roman colonia are still showing in their urban planning traces of the original layout made according to a regular pattern. This layout consisted in a chessboard of parallel streets, the main of them being the Decumanus Maximus, crossed at the center of the town by the Kardo Maximus. In this paper we discuss the orientation of the Decumanus and show examples of towns having it oriented to sunrise and sunset on solstices.
